HC issues notice to Tiwari for March 4

New Delhi, March 01:The Delhi High Court today issued a notice to veteran Congress leader N D Tiwari on a petition filed by a man who claims to be his biological son, to modify the directions passed earlier by the joint registrar regarding collection of blood samples for DNA test.

Rohit Shekhar Singh, the man who claims to be the son of the octogenarian leader, filed an urgent petition before the court asking to modify the name of the centre where the blood samples of Tiwari have to be sent for conducting DNA test to ascertain his paternity claim.

On the direction of the single judge bench on December 23, 2010, the court’s registrar, on February 8, had ordered the Centre for Cellular & Molecular Biology (CCMB), Hyderabad to conduct a DNA test of Tiwari and Rohit urgently.

The CCMB last week replied they no longer conduct DNA or fingerprinting tests. The CCMB told the court that DNA fingerprinting technology was developed at their Centre several years ago to cater to the national needs. But now the Union Government’s Department of Biotechnology (DBT) has set up a separate institute – the Centre for DNA Fingerprinting and
Diagnostics (CDFD) – which will conduct this test.

The CCMB further said that Dr J Gowrishankar is the current Director of CDFD situated in Nampally, Hyderabad.

Rohit, in his petition, urged the court to modify its previous order and now direct CDFD to collect blood samples to conduct DNA tests on Tiwari and him.

Justice Gita Mittal, after hearing the plea of Rohit, issued notices to Tiwari to file reply by March 4 as the matter is listed before the registrar on March 6.

The single judge bench had, in December last, directed the court registrar to get the blood samples of Tiwari and Rohit collected and send them to CCMB Hyderabad to ascertain the truth regarding the paternity claims made by the petitioner.

Rohit has claimed that he was born out of a relationship between Tiwari and his mother Ujjwala.
