HC grants bail to suspended official

Chennai, August 18: The Madras High Court today granted bail to the suspended Director and Protector of Emigrants R Sekar, who was arrested last month for allegedly collecting illegal gratification for providing emigration clearance.

In his order, Justice K N Basha directed Sekar to execute a bond for Rs 25,000 with two sureities for like amounts to the satisfaction of the designated Principal Special Judge for CBI cases. The judge also directed him to report daily to the police for 15 days and thereafter as and when required.

Taking into consideration that two others accused in the case were granted bail and Sekar was in police custody for six days and his office and residence were searched and certain documents seized by CBI, the Judge said ‘this court is of the considered view that no prejudice will be caused to the prosecution in the event of releasing the petitioner on bail at this stage’.

According to CBI, Sekar had ammassed wealth with the connivance of a service agent for emigration Anwar Hussain and some others by regularly collecting gratification from various candidates seeking emigration clearance.

Sekar has been charged under IPC section 120-B (criminal conspiracy) and the Prevention of Corruption Act.
