HC directs recounting of votes in Ghonda constituency

New Delhi, March 16: The Delhi High Court today directed the State Election Commission to recount the total number of votes cast in the 2008 Delhi assembly elections in Ghonda constituency within six weeks.

Justice Rajeev Sahai Endlaw also sought a report from the Commission by May seven while allowing a petition filed by Bhishan Sharma, a Congress candidate who had lost the poll by 880 votes to rival BJP candidate Sahab Singh Chauhan.

Sharma, in a petition, submitted a total of 94,222 votes were cast but more than 25,000 votes were not counted.

He claimed about 69 Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) were found defective and the votes registered by such machines were not counted.
