HC asks Maha to explain purpose behind timing of ATKT option

Mumbai, August 24: The Bombay High Court today directed the State government to file additional affidavits explaining the purpose of coming up with the ATKT (Allowed to Keep Term) option this year as late as after the results were declared.

A division bench of Chief Justice Swatenter Kumar and Justice A M Khanwilkar directed the State and the Maharashtra State Education Board to explain if they had studied the issue thoroughly and if there are vacancies in colleges in the state.

The affidavits were sought in a petition filed by the Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) challenging the ATKT system introduced by the government in July this year.

The court will hear the matter tomorrow by when the additional affidavits will have to be filed.

The court today observed that its main concern was not about the timing of the introduction of the system but about the availability of infrastructure. .
