The Andhra Pradesh High Court on Monday directed Umesh Kumar, a senior IPS Officer, against whom non-bailable warrant issued by a local court after the officer failed to appear before it in connection with a forgery case registered against him, to surrender before the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate court immediately.
While issuing these directions, the High Court stayed the execution of NBW issued against Umesh Kumar and asked him to surrender before the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate court before June 25. It may be recalled when a team of CID officials tried to execute a non-bailable warrant (NBW) against Umesh Kumar in connection with a forgery case, the officer gave a slip to them.
The execution of the warrant would mean that the IPS officer of the DG rank would be arrested and produced before a court. The court would then either allow him to file a recall petition or grant him bail. The NBW was issued by the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate after the petition for exempting him from personal appearance under section 317 of Cr PC was rejected.
Umesh Kumar is currently the chairman of Godavari Valley Development Authority (GVDA). He is facing a case in which he was accused of producing a forged letter in the name of a Rajya Sabha member to the Central government. The allegation was that the forged letter was to mar the chances of V Dinesh Reddy from being appointed as the police chief.
Both Mr. Reddy and Mr. Umesh Kumar belong to 1977 batch of the IPS.
