HC asks if there is probe against cops who tied accused

Mumbai, March 30: The Bombay High Court today sought a reply from the state as to whether any inquiry has been initiated against police officers who allegedly handcuffed and chained a prisoner when he was being shifted to another jail.

Majid Akhtar Shaikh, an accused, has filed a petition alleging that when he and some others were taken from Taloja prison (Navi Mumbai) to Aurangabad prison last year, their hands were chained to chairs during the 7-hour journey.

Similarly, whenever he was taken to the local court from the Aurangabad prison, he would be handcuffed, which was against rules, the petition states.

Advocate Y Chaudhary, appointed as amicus curie (friend of the court) to assist the court in this case, submitted that the Supreme Court has categorically stated that such a practice was illegal.
