HC asks doctor to stop practicing

Chennai, August 25: Madras High Court today directed a city doctor practicing Indian system of medicines not to practice Siddha or Ayurvedic treatment.

Justice K N Basha also restrained Vijayakumar, who was arrested on July 16 for allegedly charging exorbitant fees to cure patients but not curing them, from running nursing home in the city either himself or through his relatives or others until production of authenticated documents regarding his qualifications and registration as a practitioner before an investigating officer.

Granting him bail, the Judge directed him to furnish an immoveable property security to the value of Rs 50 lakh and also a personal bond for Rs 50,000 with two sureities for like amounts.

He has been told to report to the police daily for four weeks and thereafter as and when required.

Stating that it was unfortunate that Vijayakumar induced several patients to part with huge amounts promising to cure them of complicated illnesses but not keeping his promise, the Judge said the fact remains that he had been released on bail in three other similar cases and granted him bail.

‘This court is of the considered view that this court can not go into the merits and demerits of the case at this stage except to ensure fair and unbiased investigation in a matter like this’, the Judge said and pointed out that the petitioner had claimed he was a registered practitioner and also produced certificates and documents.

These were yet to be verified by the competent authority, the Judge noted. .
