HC asks Arnab Goswami’s response to Tharoor’s defamation plea

New Delhi: Delhi High Court on Monday sought Arnab Goswami’s response to Congress MP Shashi Tharoor’s defamation plea against him and his channel Republic TV.

Tharoor in his plea claimed damages and compensation of Rs 2 crore from Goswami and his channel for allegedly making defamatory remarks through his TV channel airing news relating him to the death of his wife Sunanda Pushkar.

“Bring down the rhetoric. You can put out your story, you can put out the facts. You cannot call him names. That is uncalled for,” Justice Manmohan said while issuing a notice to Goswami and the channel and seeking their replies by August 16, the next date of hearing.

Senior advocate Salman Khurshid, appearing for Tharoor, said that Goswami should justify his allegations he made on Tharoor through his channel, TOI reported.

Whereas, advocate Sandeep Sethi, appearing for Goswami and the channel, said they would justify each and every statement made by them and therefore, there was no need for any order directing them.

The Lok Sabha MP also sought a direction from the court for not airing any news regarding his wife through Republic TV till the investigation is done by Delhi Police.

Shashi Tharoor had filed the defamation plea in court on May 26, followed by a confirmation on Twitter.
