HC admits plea against AICTE

Hyderabad, January 22: A writ petition challenging collection of processing fee, including corpus fund, by the All India Council for Technical Education was admitted by the AP High Court today.

The petition was filed by Joseph Sriharsha Mary Indraja Educational Society and St Mary’s Group of Institutions.

They were represented by KVK Rao.

S Sriram, counsel for the petitioners, told the court that the AICTE had issued a notification on December 24, 2010, increasing the processing fee and corpus fund to be deposited by the managements for the academic year 2010-11 for starting either a technical educational institution or to increase or decrease the number of courses. He contended that since the AICTE is a regulatory body, it cannot collect fee for processing of the applications. The court directed the AICTE to file its reply on the petition within three weeks.

How can accused enjoy comforts in hospitals?

Justice NV Ramana of the AP High Court on Friday expressed surprise at the way accused in criminal cases could walk into hospitals as if they are their personal guest houses.

The judge expressed his anguish while dealing with a case relating to one Jayaram Reddy of Kadapa district who was accused in a murder case. He was not sent to jail though a competent criminal court had issued a remand order but was enjoying comforts at NIMS. The judge wanted to know how an accused who was remanded to custody could join a hospital, what was the procedure under law and how it had been followed or violated in this case. The case is adjourned to two weeks.
