Haryana: Dalit groom thrashed by upper caste youth for riding a ‘Ghodi’

Bhiwani: In yet another shocking example of deeply rooted caste bias, a groom belonging to Dalit community was thrashed, allegedly by a group of upper-caste youth for riding a mare to the bride’s house.

The incident took place late on Tuesday night at Sanjarwas village of Charkhi Dadri district when groom Sanjay and his family arrived with ‘baraat’ at bride’s residence.

The groom’s family members and the bride’s family members were brutally beaten up and suffered injuries and were taken to a primary health centre at Baund village.

Vikas Kumar, the village sarpanch’s husband said, “As the groom mounted the mare, the group of youths belonging to the upper caste community pulled him down, saying Dalits were not allowed this. This led to a scuffle between the two groups.”

“Local villagers thrashed the groom and other members of the marriage party. The police were called immediately. The situation is under control now and the police are deployed in the village,” he said.

Police arrested one accused and booked a case under relevant sections of the IPC and SC/ST (prevention of atrocities) Act and hunt is on to nab the miscreants.
