Chandigarh, April 27: In a bid to keep a check on the rising level of environment pollution in the state, Haryana government has initiated stringent measures, including registration of police cases, against those found burning wheat residue after harvesting, officials said Monday.
Karnal district administration has written to the police department to take action against eight people found indulging in the practice during the current season.
“Stern action would be taken against those who are found indulging in such practices. Government has banned the burning of wheat residue as it spreads pollution, affects environment and destroys the fertility of land,” Karnal Deputy Commissioner J.S. Ahlawat said, adding courts have also prohibited the parctice.
Ahlawat also said that stern action would be taken against those sowing ‘Saathi’ variety of paddy, which has been banned.
“Large amount of water is needed for Saathi, which is sowed in the month of April or May and harvested by the end of June. During this period, this variety of paddy is irrigated by tube-well because of lesser rain. As a result, ground water table is heavily depleted,” he said.
