Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh, February 17:A Maoist couple, considered to be hardcore, surrendered before East Godavari SP Ghattamaneni Srinivas here today.
Kolikela Balaraju (27) alias Bhagat alias Rakesh , a divisional committee member of Malkangiri, which comes under Andhra Orissa Border Special Zonal CPI-Maoists, surrendered along his wife Veka Bheeme (24).
They said they were disenchanted with the policies of the leaders and killing of innocent people in the name of police informants and decided to join the mainstream.
DIG Eluru range G Suryaprakasarao along with SP Srinivas told mediapersons that Balaraju was a hardcore Maoist who was involved in several incidents.
They include blasting of a mine-proof vehicle killing 21 SOG police personnel during 2008, blasting of police jeep at Gampakonda of Kailimela Police Station Limits killing 10 police personnel in 2003, attack on Darakonda Police Outposts snatching away 25 rifles killing eight police personnel in 1999, attack on Bodapadu Police Station in Malkangiri District snatching away 40 rifles in 1990 besides the attacking of Kunta police station, Chhattisgarh in 2002.
They were also involved in eight exchange of fires. Balaraju hails
from Dutcharti Village of Addateegala Mandal while his wife Bheeme
is a Koya Tribal from Chhattisgarh state.
SP Srinivas said Balaraju carried a reward of Rs three lakh on his head and the amount would be paid along with the relief package shortly.
