Harassment to Muslims in the name of Terrorism: Katju

Under the pretext of eradicating terrorism, Muslims are being harassed. Indian police makes an attempt to fabricate false evidence. In order to cover up its failure to arrest the real culprits. In almost all the cases, police fails to collect evidence. Mr. Justice Markandey Katju expressed these thoughts in a special meeting with Mr. Zahid Ali Khan, Editor of The Siasat Urdu Daily yesterday. Questioning the Indian system, he said that the Muslims are being projected as the symbol of evils (satan).

This is not in the interest of the country. He, however, told that as the Minorities are suffering in India, the same is the case in Pakistan and Bangladesh.

Justice Katju said that a tradition has been established that immediately after the terrorist attacks, the name of a Muslim youth or a Muslim organization is projected in the media. It is not correct. This has to change because most of the presumptions of the media prove false.

He told that this issue does not come under the purview of Press Council of India and hence he can’t take any action on such false propaganda of the police. He has made a representation to the Govt. for bringing this matter also under the jurisdiction of the Press Council.

He said that the future of Urdu in this country is bright. British imperialism declared Hindi as the language of the Hindus and Urdu the language of the Muslims, thereby creating a division in society. It is a fact that Urdu is a great language which is sweet and secular. He said that he has launched “Urdu Heritage Caravan” to highlight this fact.

He said that he has launched “Sanskrit Caravan” also because the preservation of both Urdu and Sanskrit would be the preservation of our civilization.

Justice Katju told that the time has now come to launch a country wide movement for eradication of atrocities meted out to the Muslims of India. He told that if injustices are not eradicated, terrorist activities would increase. He stressed the need to take practical steps in this direction.

He told that he has taken initiative to start a Non-Governmental Organisation “Court of Fast Resort” so that all those innocent youths who have been implicated in fabricated cases could get justice. He told that, the renowned jurist of the country. Fali S. Nariman will be the Chairman of this organization. It will be monitored by a team of legal experts. Mr. Aasif Azami would be its General Secretary. So long as the system of equal justice is not implemented in society evils can’t be eradicated. Justice Katju lamented that whenever Indian police fails to detect the real culprits, it implicates the Muslims to make itself free from responsibility. So that it could be cover up its in efficiency and save itself from suspension.

He told that some cases have come to limelight wherein the innocent Muslim youths were detained in jails for 10 to 17 years and the courts exonerated them with full respects treating them innocent. He admitted that when he was occupying a position in Supreme Court, he had a feeling that justice is not been imparted to the Muslims.

He recollected that when a Christian priest was burnt alive by the Bajrang Dal activists in Odisha as a sitting judge, he had told the Govt. that if it is in capable to protect Minorities it should relinquish power. He told that the future of the Muslims in this country is bright. No society wants to treat a section of the society bad because there are a handful person in each section who are bad. On the basis of these bad people, the entire society can’t be termed as bad.

On the attempts of the social media to spread communal hatred, he said that due to these evils, the users of Social media should not be banned but there is a need to create a mechanism to stop misuse of social media.

Explaining about his proposal to prescribe some professional education and training for journalists, he said that there is a set system for associating one self to a profession. We should adopt the same system in the field of journalism also. This proposal should not be given a negative turn. He advised the journalists to inculcate among themselves the feelings of accountability, because the journalist highlights the evils of the society.

He can’t do this, unless he himself does not feel accountability in his personality. He refused to reply on the issue of Babri Masjid saying that it is subjudice. He also told that Sanjay Dutt deserves mercy on humanitarian grounds. Sanjay Dutt has been given five years imprisonment. He told that he has forced more difficulties than this and hence he should be pardoned.
