Ahmedabad, June 16: A woman hung self at her residence in Naroda on Sunday following mental and physical harassment for dowry. Her father has lodged a
complaint against her husband and family members.
According to the complaint by Ramshankar Mishra, a resident of Bhargav Society, Sardarnagar, his daughter Meetu, 24, was married to Shailesh Tiwari, an armyman posted at Pune base in 2004. However, as per the custom in their community, Mishra did not have dowry to give to his daughter and thus she was not sent to her husband’s home.
“Mishra, however, managed to get the dowry items and finally sent Meetu to Tiwari’s Naroda house in mid-April. Her in-laws were not happy with the dowry and approached Mishra. He promised them another Rs 20,000 in near future. But, meanwhile Meetu was harassed mentally and physically,” said a Naroda police station official.
Fed up with the torture, Meetu ended her life on Sunday morning in her bedroom. She was found by her in-laws. “She was an educated woman with MA and BEd qualifications. She had recently appeared in BEd examination and passed with first class. We have lodged a complaint against Shailesh, his father Gobindprasad, mother Seetadevi, and relatives Anita and Santosh,” said a Naroda police station official.
