Hang Kasab, say cops’ widows

Mumbai, November 24: Three days before the first anniversary of the 26/11 attacks, Kavita Karkare and Smita Salaskar, widows of slain anti-terrorism squad chief Hemant Karkare and encounter specialist Vijay Salaskar, have demanded that Mohammad Ajmal Amir Kasab, the lone terrorist to be captured alive, be hanged.

“All victims and their families feel that he should be hanged” said Karkare. She and Salaskar spoke to Congress president Sonia Gandhi at a meeting lasting an hour.
The two women reportedly complained to Gandhi about the indifferent attitude of the state government towards their families. They also told Gandhi of the problems faced by their families after the death of their husbands. Both police officers lost their lives while fighting terrorists near Cama Hospital.

Emerging from 10 Janpath, the two ladies appreciated the concern showed by the Congress president. Karkare said,”She was very supportive and reassured us. It was an emotional meeting. She understands what we are going through.”

Karkare did not, however, reveal details of the meeting. “We don’t have many complaints,” she said. “She understood our plight and the tough time we are facing and assured us of all help. We have got a very positive response from her.”

Asked about her husband’s missing bullet-proof jacket, Karkare said the report was true and no one should ever have to go through the same situation. She also said that she did not have any issues with the state government and the Mumbai police.
