Haiti, April 17: Haiti has postponed the announcement of the final results of the presidential election, which is expected to confirm Michel Martelly as the winner, to Wednesday.
Haitian election officials said the announcement of the final results, which were expected to be announced on Saturday, was delayed since the required conditions were not met, AFP reported.
“Due to the high number of disputed ballots, the Provisional Electoral Council has been forced to postpone to Wednesday, April 20, 2011 the announcement of final election results,” the body said in a statement.
The 50-year-old singer Martelly won a landslide victory against former first lady Mirlande Manigat in the March 20 runoff election.
Preliminary results indicated that Martelly won the election with 67.57 percent of the vote, to 31.74 percent for Manigat.
Martelly has already taken steps to take the reins of power from the incumbent president, Rene Preval, who was prohibited from running for another term in office by the Haitian Constitution.
Martelly will be inaugurated as Haiti’s new president on May 14.
