Guwahati, May 2 (ANI): Around 342 players from different parts of the country, Bangladesh and Nepal participated in the Fifth edition of Jugal the Kishore Newatia Memorial International Chess Championship in Guwahati. Held under the aegis of Lions Club, Guwahati, the aim of the event was to provide an opportunity to local chess players to compete with national and international players. The event was open to players with a FIDE rating of 2200 and below, and also to all unrated players. Binod Khemka, Chairman of Lion”s Club said, “Players from the Northeast are very good, they play very well but they get fewer opportunities and that”s why they don”t go out to play. VO2: People believe that chess is gaining popularity in Assam and there are more opportunities for players now.” A participant, Sanchita said, “This tournament is very good, I got an opportunity to practice in this tournament and if we play well then we can be good players in the future.” Such events provide a good platform to youngsters to showcase their talent.
