Guwahati: 10 kgs of IED recovered from Guwahati Railway Station

Guwahati: The Bomb Disposal Squad successfully prevented a major disaster at Guwahati Railway Station after a parcel containing 10 kilograms of powerful Improvised Explosive Device(IED) was recovered from the Railway station.

According to the Police, the investigations carried out revealed, the parcel was registered at Guwahati General Post Office for Silchar and was brought to the Railway Station on Thursday.

An official of the Railway Mail service said, “This morning when we were sorting the bags according to their destinations, we heard a clock ticking sound from one of the bags bound for Silchar. A home guard immediately isolated the bag and informed the Railway Police”.

The bag containing the bomb was powerful to cause serious damage but the alertness of the Railway mail service officials prevented the disaster and informed the Bomb disposal squad on time.
A special team of the Assam Police arrived in time to dispose of the explosive and confirmed it to be IED. The team later took it to an isolated place to dispose of the bomb.

Police and other social security forces are now searching the entire railway station. Sniffer dogs and bomb detectors are being used to sniff the area for any possible explosives planted in the area.

According to the Security sources, this was the first time ever where criminals have used parcel service for the explosion. “We are looking into all the possibilities,” said a senior police officer.

Union Minister Rajen Gohain speaking about the possible disaster said, “We are going to step up security measures further at Guwahati Railway station which caters to passengers travelling to entire Northeastern states”, adding that the alertness of the railway police officials has prevented the disaster from happening.
