New Delhi: In first of its kind in India, Doctors at Fortis Hospital in Gurugram conducted a liver transplantation through a minimally invasive technical procedure, where they removed a part of donor’s liver to transplant it to the recipient.
A laparoscopic surgery was performed on a 28-year-old Iraqi mother through Hepatectomy, wherein a part of her liver was removed to help her two-and-a-half-year-old son suffering from the end-stage liver disease. A report by Times of India quoted Dr Vivek Vij, director of liver transplant at Fortis hospitals, as saying that there have been no reported cases of hepatectomy through laparoscopic surgery in India.

Dr Vij added that the surgery has been performed multiple times in the US and other countries, and due to its success, doctors decided to attempt the case. The surgery that involved five incisions of only five 1 cm holes on donor’s abdomen, took around 10 hours to harvest and transplant the liver.
Though minimally invasive surgical techniques are difficult, less pain and less visible scars are advantages, said Dr Vij.
