Beirut, February 20: Four masked gunmen held up a Beirut bank today before fleeing with more than $200,000 from a safe, police and media reports said.
“Four masked, armed men entered the First National Bank in Jnah in broad daylight on Saturday and managed to steal an as yet unspecified amount of money by threatening the manager and staff at gunpoint,” a police official said.
“To our knowledge, no one was harmed,” said the official, who was speaking on condition of anonymity.
Security forces cordoned off the area and were questioning witnesses, he said, noting that bank robberies were rare in Lebanon.
The state-run National News Agency reported the gunmen made off with more than $200,000 from the safe, most of which was in the local currency, the Lebanese pound.
