Qatar, March 28: Qatar’s support for the rebel Libyan National Council shows the group is the only legitimate representative of the Libyan people, the GCC secretary general said on Monday.
Qatar became the first Arab country to recognise Libya’s rebels, according to report on Monday by the Qatari state news agency, a day after a senior Libyan rebel officials said Qatar had agreed to market crude oil produced from east Libyan fields that Muammar Gaddafi no longer controls.
“The Secretary General of the GCC confirmed that Qatar’s recognition of the transitional council as the only legitimate representative of the Libyan people comes in line with the decisions of the GCC with Qatar’s stance supporting the choices of the Libyan people and their protection from the continuous brutality of the regime,” said Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Secretary General Abdulrahman al-Attiyah, in a statement given to Reuters in Riyadh.
“The Libyan system has lost its legitimacy,” said Attiyah, a Qatari and the outgoing secretary general of the six-member economic and political bloc, having served for the past nine years.
