The sad demise of former Prime Minister of India, Mr. Indra Kumar Gujral is not only the loss of India but it is a great loss to Urdu speakers also. He has left indelible impressions on the horizon of development and popularization of Urdu language and Literature. As the first Chancellor of the first Urdu University established after Independent India, Maulana Azad national Urdu University, Hyderabad, he his services are noteworthy.
Prof. Mohammed Miyan, Vice Chancellor of Maulana Azad National Urdu University, in his condolence message said that he was the true sympathizer and a great lover of Urdu. He was the true representative of Urdu Civilization. The recommendations he submitted as the chairman of Gujral Committee for the development of Urdu and for providing educational facilities to Urdu speakers were of far reaching consequences. As the aftermath of these recommendations, the scheme of the establishment of Urdu University was formulated.
Prof, Mohammed Miyan recalled that Mr. Inder Kumar Gujral was appointed as the first Chancellor of Urdu University on 24th May 1999. A few months after his appointment, he visited Urdu University on 24th October 1999. He also participated in the Foundation Day Celebrations of the University on 9th January 2001 held in Hyderabad along with Mr. Kuldip Nayyar and Justice A M Ahmedy. In the same year, he participated in Maulana Azad Day Celebrations organized by Urdu University on 25th November in New Delhir. President of India, Sri K R Narayanan was the chief guest for this function. Mr. Inder Kumar Gujral had presided overthis memorable function. Mr. Gujral had inaugurated the Administrative Building of Urdu University on 28th December 2008 in Gachi Bowli, Hyderabad. He always used to show his concern for the development of Urdu. His patronage during the initial stages of development of this University will be remembered by the future generations and the students of this University for a longer time. The first Vice Chancellor of this University, Prof. Mohammed Shamim Jairajpuri had personal relations with Mr. Inder Kumar Gujral. Prof. Shamim JairaJpuri also expressed his deep condolences on his sad demise and said that Urdu lost one of its great sympathizer and a true patron .
