‘Gujarat’ to replace ‘Bombay’ in all state Acts

Ahmedabad, April 01: The word ‘Gujarat’ will replace ‘Bombay’ in all the Acts and rules in force in the state from Sunday, fifty-one years after Gujarat was carved out of erstwhile state of Bombay.

The announcement was made by Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi yesterday, during a function to mark the conclusion of the state’s Golden Jubilee celebrations, in Gandhinagar.

Gujarat Assembly, on March 28, had passed a special bill to replace Bombay with Gujarat in the names of all the Acts.

Gujarat Governor Dr Kamla had given approval to the amendment, and the same had been now notified as ‘The Gujarat Short Titles (Amendment) Act, 2011, in the extraordinary Gazette of Gujarat government, Modi said.

“For example, the ‘Bombay Land Revenue Code 1879’, will now be known as ‘Gujarat Land Revenue Code 1879’,” the Chief Minister said.

“Now onwards, all the 67 such Acts will be mentioned as ‘Gujarat..Act’ by the government machinery,” he added.
