Gujarat to reintroduce prohibition Bill in Assembly

Gandhinagar, December 15: The Gujarat Government will reintroduce the amendment Bill on prohibition in the Assembly without changing the provision for death sentence as suggested by the Governor.

Bombay Prohibition (Gujarat Amendment) Bill, 2009, will be reintroduced in the winter session of the Assembly beginning here on December 17, official sources said today.

The Bill provides for capital punishment for manufacture, supply, transport and sale of spurious liquor if its consumption results in any death.

The Bill was passed in the last Assembly session in the backdrop of a hooch tragedy in Ahmedabad in July this year in which over 130 people had died.

However, the Governor, after consulting legal and constitutional experts, sent back the Bill to the Assembly for reconsideration contending that the provision for capital punishment is contrary to IPC clauses and Central Acts.

However, the Government has decided to reintroduce the Bill in its original form, they said.
