Gujarat jails are over crowded says minister

Gandhinagar, March 05: Admitting that jails in the state are overcrowded, Minister of State for Home Amit Shah today said in Gujarat Assembly that his ministry would be increasing capacity of prisons by December this year.

Shah was replying to a question on state of jails and incidents of violence taking place inside them by Congress MLA Bavku Ungadh during the Question Hour.

“There is overcrowding in the jails of the state. We will be increasing the capacity of jails by 6000 by December 2010,” Shah told the House.

The Congress MLA had sought information on the incidents of violence and murder inside Sabarmati Jail in Ahmedabad.

14 incidents of violence, one murder and eight other incidents have been reported from the Sabarmati Jail in the past one year, he said in a written reply.
