Ahmedabad, September 04: The Gujarat High Court on Friday set aside the ban on Darjeeling MP Jaswant Singh’s book Jinnah: India-Partition, Independence imposed by the Gujarat government.
Gujarat government had sought time to file a fresh notification but the court did not grant it.The original notification by the state government had said that Jaswant’s book was objectionable, misleading and against public tranquility. The court observed that the state government gave no grounds for the notification.
The notification was issued under Section 95 of the Criminal Procedure Code of the Indian Penal Code.
“I am thrilled,” Jaswant Singh told CNN-IBN while reacting to the ban being set aside.
Jaswant’s lawyer Anand Yagnik said that court observed that the state government notification indicated that the state government had not read the book before imposing the ban.
Both Jaswant and the book’s publisher Rupa Publications had challenged the ban in the High Court.
