Sitting MLA and BJP candidate from Shehra seat in Panchmahal district Jetha Bharwad has been detained along with couple of his personal security guards in connection with a firing that took place at a polling booth in Tarsan village on Monday, police said.
Four persons were injured after Bharwad’s personal security guard opened fire following shuffle with Congress workers at the polling booth. The incident took place at Tarsan village of Shehra constituency where the members of two parties, BJP and Congress, entered into an altercation.
During this altercation, BJP candidates’s personal guard opened fire injuring four persons. In retaliation Congress supporters started pelting stone at the BJP members causing minor injury to Bharwad, police officer who was on the spot said.
Police immediately rushed to the spot and took the situation under control. Polling was affected at the booth, which resumed after sometime. An entire report of the incident would be sent to the election commission which will take a decision on conducting re-poll or not, police said.
“We have detained the BJP MLA and his men at the hospital where he had gone to take treatment after sustaining injury in stone pelting,” Panchmahal superintendent of police Sachin Badsha told Business Standard over phone. He further said that investigation into the incident was on.
