As per the records of Investigating Agencies and Judiciary, Gujarat records more than 250 paternity test cases annually and surprisingly, data reveals that 98% of cases confirm suspicions.
Police said that most cases are financially motivated, men opt for it if they want divorce and if they doubts about the paternity of their children. On the other hand, women opt for the test in an alimony cases.The DNA division of the Directorate of Forensic Sciences (DFS), Gandhinagar, works for the tests that are routed through the police and courts as reported in Times of undia.
According to the officials usually DNA test is performed when the average age of the child is 10 to 12 years when their physical resemblance to parents starts appearing.
Last year 60-year-old man approached a court seeking a paternity test on his only girl child. He decided to go for DNA test as his nagging doubts were affecting his relationship with his daughter and DNA profiling proved that she is not his biological child.
Seeing the increasing number of cases where cases confirm suspicions, many leading pathology and genetic testing laboratory in the city stopped private requests for paternity tests.
