Guinea army violence

Guinea, December 04: Guinea’s military put up blockades at main roads into the capital today after an officer accused of trying to assassinate junta leader Captain Moussa Dadis Camara went into hiding, sources said.

Camara was shot and wounded by an aide, Lieutenant Aboubacar Sidiki Diakite yesterday, according to the junta.

Camara’s condition was not known but the junta at first said Diakite had been detained.

The lieutenant’s entourage, however, said he had gone into hiding.

“He is in a safe house,” according to one informed civilian source, whose comment was confirmed by a Guinean military official.

While the shooting heightened tensions, residents said the city was generally calm, with no troubles reported during the night.

About 100 troops manned each of two blockades on the main roads out of Conakry as soldiers searched cars and stopped all state-owned vehicles from leaving the capital.

Armed soldiers were also around Conakry’s administrative district which includes Camp Koundara, the military base where the assassination attempt was carried out.

Guinea has been in the international spotlight since junta soldiers killed dozens of opposition supporters who were taking part in a protest at a Conakry stadium in September 28.

After the assassination attempt there was shooting around the camp and soldiers were deployed on the streets.
