Groom held for demanding dowry ahead of marriage

Prakasam, August 25: Unwilling to succumb to the last minute demands of additional dowry, a young bride on Tuesday got the groom arrested instead of wailing over her fate.

According to reports coming in, the groom called off the marriage when her family could not meet the demand for additional dowry hours ahead of the ceremony at Garapeta in Marripudi mandal in Prakasam district as The bride, an engineer by education, and her parents refused to let the last minute blackmailing tactics work and lodged a complaint against the groom at the police station.

The police soon took the groom Srinivasa Rao in custody and charged him with demanding Rs 10 lakh as dowry. The police have registered a case under Dowry Prohibition Act and arrested Srinivasa Rao and his parents.

Srinivasa Rao is a field officer in Andhra Bank, Cheemakurthy branch.

According to the complaint, Srinivasa Rao had already been paid Rs 6 lakh in cash, a house and agriculture land as dowry by the girl’s parents.

However, the bridegroom’s parents demand additional dowry half-an-hour ahead of the ceremony. “They threatened us that the marriage will be solemnised only if the demand of additional dowry is fulfilled,” the girl parents said.
