Granting citizenship on the basis of religion is unconstitutional: Mahanta

New Delhi: Former chief minister of Assam Praful Kumar Mahanta and other ministers and MLAs organised Assam Andolan Sangrami March and dharna in New Delhi, demanding the withdrawal of the Citizenship Act, 1955 (Amendment) Bill 2016.

They appealed not to grant citizenship to any person on the basis of religion. The protestors shouted slogans like ‘Modi government Murdabad’ and took out march till Thana Parliament Street. They also submitted a plea demanding immediate implementation of Assam Accord 1985.

Speaking on the occasion former chief minister Praful Kumar Mahanta said we won’t tolerate efforts to pass a bill in order to make Bangladeshi Hindus Indians at any cost. This is quite illegal and against democracy, he said. India is a secular country where nothing can be done on the basis of religion, he said.
