Govt’s poverty reduction plan to be discussed at conference

New Delhi, September 09: The government’s poverty reduction strategy will come under the scanner at a conference of state rural development and panchayati raj ministers to be inaugurated by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in New Delhi on Wednesday.

The day-long conference, convened by the rural development ministry, will also discuss effective implementation of the flagship rural job programme NREGA to strengthen the delivery mechanism.

The government plans to re-design the existing Swarnajayanti Gram Swarojgar Yojna as the National Rural Livelihood Mission and the meeting will provide a forum to various stakeholders to exchange views in this regard.

The mission seeks to eradicate poverty in a time-bound manner by raising the income of the rural poor on sustainable basis, a ministry official said.

It proposes to introduce interest subsidy for ensuring availability of credit at prime lending rate to the self-employed people from public sector banks.

It also seeks to focus on sectors like textile, construction, security, automobile and health services, he said.

The mission proposes to take a major initiative of setting up 500 rural self-employment training institutes in the country by 2012 by involving public sector banks, he added.
