Govt will enact law to curb video piracy: CM

Hyderabad, March 24: Chief Minister K Rosaiah assured the House today that if need be the Government would enact a special law to curb video piracy that was spelling doom for the Telugu film industry. He made the statement reacting to a special mention on video piracy made by actor-turned-MLA K Chiranjeevi in the Assembly today.

Rosaiah informed that when artistes like Chiranjeevi and Jayasudha were in the House, the Government could not forget the promises made and stated that they would be kept. Recalling an incident in the regime of India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, Rosaiah stated that when at a certain point the MPs pointed out that the farmers were being forgotten, Nehru had stated that when a farmers’ leader like NG Ranga was there in the House, he could not forget the farmers. Information and Public Relations minister J Geetha Reddy stated that in three months time licences would be issued to video libraries in the State.

Powers would be given to sub inspectors to inspect the video libraries and piracy would be added to the Prevention of Dangerous Activities Act, she said.

“We will soon set up an exclusive antipiracy wing for which the modalities are being worked out,’’ she added.

Earlier making the special mention Chiranjeevi wanted the Government not to forgot the promises made in the last two weeks. He said mere assurances would not do and the Government should turn its words into concrete action. BJP legislator G Kishan Reddy wanted the Government to protect the Telugu students living in United States of America. He said that a student Prashanth was killed recently in US and wanted the Government in bringing back the body to the country.
