Govt will build 1 lakh houses for flood hit

Hyderabad, October 11: Chief Minister K Rosaiah Saturday announced that the government would build about one lakh houses in six months as a special package for the victims of floods in five districts of the State.

Speaking to the media here today, he said that enumeration of collapsed houses due to floods was going on and construct ion work would begin as soon as the enumeration was completed.

He said that 50 villages were totally devastated and they would be rebuilt. The villages in the low-lying areas would be relocated in the upper planes.

The Chief Minister described the package as unprecedented.

This one-time special package was being taken up as the areas experienced unprecedented floods.

He said that nowhere in the country was such a massive rehabilitation programme was taken up.

Rosaiah said that under the special package, Central housing scheme Indira Awas Yojana and the State’s housing programme would be clubbed and a unit would cost Rs 62,500.

He warned district collectors against lapses in enumeration and said that the list would be rechecked and malpractices would be dealt with severely.

The special package would apply for the houses collapsed between September 29 and October 4, he said and added that if houses damaged otherwise were included in the list action would be taken against the erring officials.

Meanwhile, Labour Minister R Venkat Reddy said that his department would contribute Rs 6 crore to the government for construction of houses for construction labourers.
