Govt. to take action against 189 schools

New Delhi, July 10: The Delhi High Court has given directives to the government to take action against 189 schools, which did not abide by the order to reserve 15pc seats for students hailing from economically weaker sections of the society for the academic year 2009-10.

These schools were supposed to provide free education to the students.

A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) was being heard by the court filed by Non Governmental Organization (NGO) Social Jurist through Counsel Ashok Aggarwal.

The petition required orders for the government to take action against the private/unaided schools, which acquired land at concessional rates from the government with the criteria that free education will be offered to poor students, but did not follow the lease condition.

394 schools were given land at concessional rates with freeship quota for poor students being 15pc, out of which 189 schools have violated the condition.

The list of 189 schools tendered by the government comprises of few renowned schools like Air Force Bal Bharati; Lodhi Road, DPS; Mathura Road and Tagore International; East of Kailash for violating the criteria.

22 schools comprising of Modern School; Barakhamba Road, Spring Dales; Pusa Road and Sanskriti; Chankyapuri were unsuccessful in stating whether they have meted out the condition or not.

The possible action that can be taken includes de-recognition of the school, taking over the management or taking action for contempt of court.

“Different actions will be taken by the Deputy Director – to issue show cause notice and take action against them for violating the orders,” the department intimated the court.
