Hyderabad, October 05: The State Government feels that there is no threat of unprecedented flood in Vijayawada, other parts of Krishna and Guntur districts.
It is basing this assumption with inflows into the Srisailam Reservoir decreasing.
It, however, does not mean that there is no flood threat at all. Only, it may not be on a collosal scale. Now the task before the irrigation officials is to see that flood flow should not cross 10 lakh cusecs at Prakasam barrage.
Speaking to mediapersons after aerial review of the flood hit areas, Chief Minister K Rosaiah stated that the inflow at Srisailam reservoir came down to 9.30 lakh cusecs at 7 pm from 11.60 cusecs at 4 pm.
At the Tungabhadra reservoir, outflow was about one lakh cusecs, at Jurala reservoir it was about 7.9 lakh cusecs and at Prakasam barrage it was about 8.54 lakh cusecs, he informed. Nagarjunasagar Project could impound 7 more tmc ft of water as the present volume of water in the reservoir was that much less than its gross storage capacity.
He rubbished reports that there was a danger of breaches to Almatty reservoir and the flood threat was still prevailing.
He said said that relief measures were in full swing and people were moving to relief centres. The Disaster Management department said that about 34 persons had died so far in 498 villages in 87 mandals in five districts.
The number of people affected is about 14.08 lakh and the number of houses damaged 60,883.
About 370 boats are in operation, 1,143 swimmers are deployed to rescue the stranded people, 650 defense personnel are participating in rescue and relief operations and 16 helicopters are in use. In the five districts about 4.77 lakh people were evacuated, 2.57 lakhs are in the camps and about 8.68 lakh food packets were distributed.
