Govt sanctions Rs 1.5 crore to Mohun Bagan

Kolkata, February 04: The West Bengal government today sanctioned Mohun Bagan Athletic Club Rs 1.5 crore for renovation of a portion of its gallery to mark the centenary of the club winning the IFA Shield for the first time defeating the Britishers.

Finance Minister Asim Dasgupta said the decision was taken as the club brought pride to the country on a historic occasion.

The state government also waived the entertainment tax on screening of ‘Egaro’ (The Eleven), a Bengali film depicting how a barefoot bunch of 11 Indians representing Mohun Bagan, defeated East Yorkshire Regiment 2-1 to lay their hands for the first time on the coveted IFA Shield on July 29, 1911.

This would reduce the price of ticket enabling more people to watch the film, Dasgupta said.
