Govt mulling World Kannada Conference every five years: CM

Belgaum, March 14: A decision over holding a World Kannada Conference every five years and its venue will be taken shortly, Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa said today at the valedictory function of the second “Vishwa Kannada Sammelana” here.

Listing out the measures the government has taken to protect and preserve Kannada language and culture, Yeddyurappa said Rs one crore each had been sanctioned for the universities of Heidelberg, Munich (both Germany) and Vienna for the study of Kannada state and language.

It has also been decided to set up a theme park at Hampi to depict the lost glory of the Vijaya Nagar Empire, he said.

The pilgrimage centre of Basavakalyan would be developed and elevated to international standard, the Chief Minister said, adding a memorial of legendary poet Kanakadasa would be set up at Kaginele, where he lived and wrote most of his work.

Yeddyurappa also lauded the efforts of those involved in organising the Conference and thanked the people of Belgaum for their “overwhelming support” for the event, which was held here from March 11 to 13.
