Govt. irritated on abandoning Urdu from Open University, Dy. CM to meet VC today

Hyderabad: Govt. has taken a serious note of abandoning of Urdu medium facility from graduation courses of Dr. Ambedkar Open University, Hyderabad.

Dy. CM of Telangana State, Mr. Mohammed Mahmood Ali has commissioned a meeting with the VC of Open University, Dr. Sitarama Rao. It will be attended by Mr. A.K. Khan, Advisor to Govt. on Minority Affairs, Mr. Syed Omer Jaleel, IAS, Secretary, Dept. of Minorities Welfare and Prof. S.A. Shukoor, Director, Urdu Academy.

This decision of Open University increased the anxiety of the Urdu medium candidates which is resulting in getting a bad name to the Govt. The attention of the Dy. CM was invited from various sections of society in this regard.

Mr. Mahmood Ali told that Govt. of TS is bound to promote Urdu language and it will not allow Open University to take anti-Urdu decisions. In the meeting, it is proposed to find out the reasons for abandoning Urdu medium. If need be, the work pertaining to the translation of Urdu textbook could be entrusted to TS Urdu Academy.

It may be mentioned that for the past 25 years, the facility of Urdu medium has been in vogue. University should have prepared the text books first and then it should have canceled the previous text books.

It is very strange that under the pretext of non-availability of Urdu translators in Hyderabad, University abandoned Urdu medium facility whereas this city is the citadel of Urdu language and literature. After the retirement of Professors in Urdu Dept. of Open University, the Dean and Professor of Hindi Dept. was made in charge of Urdu medium. If need be, Open University can utilize the services of Urdu medium teacher on the deputation basis.
