Govt hikes seats for primary students in govt schools by 35,000

New Delhi, July 21: The Delhi government has increased the number of seats for primary students from nursery to class V by over 35,000. Now, each class will have 10 more students as compared to the last year.

Education Minister Arvinder Singh Lovely said a circular in this regard has already been issued to the schools concerned which would ensure admission to more than 35,000 students in the 375 Sarvodaya Vidyalayas from nursery to Class V.

From the current session, instead of 40, 50 students would be admitted in the primary section of each government school.

“There has been a growing demand for admissions to government schools. We have seen in the past that many parents have transferred their wards from private schools to government schools since we have better results,” said Education Minister Arvinder Singh Lovely.

This year, the Delhi government schools have recorded an increase in the pass percentage in Class 12 from 85.70 per cent to 87.14 per cent. This year the number of merit winners in government schools had also increased from 98 last year to 124. In total, the Delhi government has 375 primary schools, in which nearly 17.60 lakh students are enrolled.

Lovely said that the government schools are so sought after that there are around 12 lakh students studying in the government schools in Delhi as compared to 8 lakh students a couple of years back. He said that the school dropout rate had dropped from 17.5 per cent to 5 per cent.
