The State Government has started taking measures to grow crops in barren lands.

In a written answer to a question raised by MLA J Ramesh, Rural Development Minister D Manikya Varaprasad Rao informed the House on Monday that under Mahatra Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Schemes works were being taken up for development of fallow lands, including works such as bush clearance, boulder removal, land leveling and slit application to make the land fit for agriculture.

So far, the minister said that 11,34,614 acres of fallow lands have been developed with an expenditure of Rs 1007.79 crore during the year 2011-12. (INN)
