Govt floats tenders for 30 food parks

Kopargaon (Maha), January 17: The government has floated tenders for setting up 30 mega food parks in different parts of the country, Union Food Processing Minister Subodh Kant Sahai said today.

The government will invest Rs 5,000 crore in the food parks in the 11th five year plan period (up to 2012), he told reporters in the temple town of Shirdi.

Process is on to start food parks in Uttaranchal, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Assam, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh, he added.

Food parks typically offers integrated facilities for food trade and expected to benefit farmers immensely.

The government is likely to attract investment of Rs one lakh crore in food processing through financial institutions and the private sector over the next few years, he said.
