Ludhiana, July 01: The state government finally lent a helping hand to Punjab School Education Board Class XII topper Prabhjot Kaur. The topper was awarded a cheque of Rs 1 lakh by Ludhiana Deputy Commissioner Vikas Garg today.
Neha Sharma, who ranked third in the state and first in the district in the PSEB Class X exams, too was handed over a cheque of Rs 25,000. Both the achievers needed financial support to pursue their dreams.
While Prabhjot aspires to be a fashion designer, Neha wants to be an engineer.
After The Indian Express highlighted the plight of the students on June 5 in the news item “They brought home laurels but govt not impressed”, the Deputy Commissioner called them up and forwarded their request for monetary aid to the higher authorities.
Harjeet Singh, father of Prabhjot, said, “Today I got a call from Assistant Commissioner A K Jain, who asked me to collect the cheque of Rs 1 lakh. The Deputy Commissioner handed over the cheque to my daughter and applauded her efforts.
I am thankful to him for helping us in this hour of need
Jubilant Prabhjot, who has already been given free admission in BA-I by Devki Devi Jain Memorial College, said, “Now I can fulfill my dream of becoming a fashion designer. I have no words to express my gratitude to all those who helped me.”
An equally elated Neha said, “I am very happy after getting Rs 25,000 cheque.” Her father Tilak Raj Sharma said, “With the support of Dr Ravindera Vatsayan, Ralson Industries Managing Director Sanjeev Pahwa and the district administration, I am sure one day my daughter would realise her dream.”
