Govt. to constitute executive committee to assist PM”s Council on Climate Change

The government on Thursday decided to constitute an executive committee on climate change to assist the Prime Minister’s Council on the issue.

The executive committee will assist in evolving a coordinated response to issues relating to climate change at the national level and regularly monitor the implementation of the eight national missions and other initiatives on climate change.

The committee will also advise on modifications in objectives, strategies and structure of the missions, as may be necessary and co-ordinate with various agencies on the issues related to climate change.

The committee”s chairman will be the Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister. The Environment and Forest Secretary will be the member-convenor.

Other committee members include the secretaries of the various ministries, including finance, power, new and renewable energy, urban development, water resources, science and technology, agriculture, education, earth sciences, coal, petroleum and natural gas.

The committee chairman might invite any other officers and experts to the meetings as and when necessary.

The Prime Minister’s Council on Climate Change and the Executive Committee on Climate Change would be serviced by the Ministry of Environment and Forests, besides the Planning Commission. (ANI)
