Government’s attitude has always been negative towards minorities in general and Muslims in particular. No measures have been taken for the educational and economic development of minorities even after the Sachar Committee Report came to the fore. A microscopic view of the situation reveals that sectors related to Muslims are being shut up with a planned conspiracy. One such example is Unani medicine. The famous Nizamia Tibbi College, Shifakhana Unani Charminar’s miserable condition which was formed in 1938 is telltale sign of government’s step motherly treatment towards this field.
Every year more than 800 candidates write BUMCET and nearly 600 qualify the exam but only 110 seats are available in Andhra Pradesh. Although the UGC sanctioned 75 BUMS and 38 MD Unani seats but due to lack of infrastructure and staff 15 BUMS seats were slashed. Out of 38 MD seats only 10 were sanctioned by Central Council of Indian Medicine.
If we review the budget allotted by the government to various medical fields, the step motherly treatment adopted by the government towards Unani medicine will be quite clear. For financial year 2013-14 Rs. 17.21 crore has been allotted for Ayurvedic medicine, Rs. 15.82 crore for homeopathy medicine while only 8.27 crore have been allotted to Unani medicine where majority of Muslim students take admission.
