Governor Lays Stress On Improving Literacy Rate

Hyderabad, September 09: The Governor, Mr E S L Narsimhan on Wednesday emphasized the need to fight the two key social evils of ‘exclusion and deprivation’ by increasing the literacy levels and education in the society.

Launching the International Literacy Day celebrations and Saakshar Bharathi Programme in the State at Shilpa Kala Vedika here, Mr Narsimhan opined that “exclusion and deprivation” were the root cause of many problems facing the people. Education was necessary to fight against the two social evils. Improving the education levels in the society would also check exploitation, he added.

Claiming that education was nothing but civilization of human minds, he said literacy was an essential tool for communication for sharing knowledge. “Man’s education was only for wage earning, but education of women will civilize the entire family and there after the society”, he added.

Claiming Saaksar Bharathi was a fabulous program that laid main focus on women literacy, he appealed to the corporate houses and the private companies to contribute their mite for implementation of the programme as their social responsibility. “Even a single corporate house in the State should come forward by the end of the day to bear something in the amount of Rs.five crore, which was the total payment to the teachers, and make the literacy programme a success in the State. Otherwise, it was shameful to us”, he added.

He asked the Principal Secretary of Education to inform him after six months how much improvement was achieved in the field of literacy in the State. “I will visit the villages and talk to the villagers on the matter”, he added.
