It is run by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

“World Environment Day is also known as Environment Day, Eco Day or short form WED. It has been one of the great annual events for years which is being celebrated worldwide by the people aiming to protect the unique and life nurturing Nature,” Acharya said.

The celebration started as an annual event in 1973 to raise global awareness about the importance of the healthy and green environment in human lives, to solve the environmental issues by implementing some positive environmental actions, he said.

The Day was also to make aware the public worldwide that everyone is responsible for saving his environment and not only by government or organisations working for it, the Governor said.

Stating it is important to care about the environment, he said thoughtful people can care about the environment and at the same time see the need to exploit or use nature for resources to satisfy the needs of our species.

“The human species needs food and water. We need energy. But we also need to protect the ecosystem niches that make survival of our species possible. Beyond that, we need to protect the niches for other species too,” Acharya said.

Pointing out environmental protection is important for several reasons such as ensuring a lasting supply of resources and for providing access to clean food and water, he said adequate environmental protection helps to reduce the risk of related health problems and promotes a healthier environment in places where humans live, work and learn.
