On Saturday, Children from government schools have proved everybody wrong by participating in the Spelling Bee contest organized just for them. It is often observed that these children were laughed at for their poor public speaking skills.
However, it was a special moment for Shivani GD, a class IX student from a government high school in Honnaganahatti village near Tavarekere along Magadi Road, as she has proved her self by participating in Spelling Bee competition which was conducted on Saturday and winning a tablet computer.
The annual event was organized by Sahasra Deepika, an NGO, saw about 900 class IX children from 12 schools put their skills to test.
It was a tough job for the judges in the final phase, as the children overcame all challenges thrown at them.
Shivani got a close fight from her classmate Chandrashekar S, who fought for the top spot through 14 rounds. At one phase, the judges d came to a decision to ask questions out of Spelling Bee books. Chandrashekar lost when he failed to give the correct spelling of “wreckage”.
The audience applauded every correct answer by the finalists.
The third spot was secured by Reshma K from a Gottigere high school. It was her teachers’ tips on learning complex words which helped her do well.
As said by Vijaya Ramakrishna of Sahasra Deepika, all government school children need is a proper platform and encouragement to come up in life. “When it comes to talent, they are a treasure.”
