Government has finalized BPO policy for smaller towns: R S Prasad

Union Minister for Communication and Information Technology Ravi Shankar Prasad has said that the government has finalized the Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) policy for smaller towns.

It has also approved 48,000 seats for the setting up of call centres across the country.

The minister said this on Friday while laying the foundation stone of the National Institute of Electronics and Information Technology (NIELIT) headquarters in New Delhi.

He further said these call centre seats will be divided among states based on their respective population.

He said the aim of the policy was to provide incentives to companies to set up BPOs in small towns.

He said India’s IT profile needs to be widened to encompass small towns, as currently, they were concentrated in cities like Gurgaon, Pune, Hyderabad, Chennai, Vijaywada, Bengaluru and Mysore.

Prasad said the demand for IT-skilled people will increase once call centres become operational in the smaller towns. (ANI)
