Gov says no to remission of sentence of convicts

Tumkur (Kar), August 12: Karnataka Governor H R Bhardwaj has returned a proposal sent by the state government recommending remission of sentence of 593 convicts and for their release on the occasion of Independence Day.

“There is no provision under law that facilitates extending of remission of sentence of convicts on the basis of their good conduct and health reasons. Hence I have returned the file sent to me by the government,” he told reporters on the sidelines of a function here.

The former Union law minister pointed out that the high court had taken exception in 2007 when the then government made moves to release convicts.

He also referred to the rejection of such pleas by the government by his predecessors, including Rameshwar Thakur and T N Chaturvedi.
